Ceramic coating and paint protection film (PPF) are the two heavyweights of car paint protection, and they're constantly confused. The short version: a ceramic coating is a chemical layer that makes your paint glossy and easy to clean, while PPF is a physical layer that actually stops stone chips and scratches. Here's how to pick the right one.

What ceramic coating does best

  • Creates a deep, glossy, hydrophobic finish so water and dirt slide off
  • Makes washing far quicker and protects against UV, bird droppings and chemical stains
  • Covers the entire car affordably compared with full PPF

What it won't do is stop a stone chip. A coating is only microns thick — it's fantastic protection against the elements, but it's not armour.

What PPF does best

  • Physically absorbs stone chips, scratches and road rash before they reach your paint
  • Self-heals light swirls and marks with heat from the sun or warm water
  • Is ideal for high-impact areas — the bonnet, front bumper, guards and mirrors

PPF is thicker, more labour-intensive to install, and costs more per panel — which is why many people protect just the front of the car where chips actually happen.

So which should you get?

Choose ceramic coating if…

You want the whole car to look glossy and stay easy to clean, and your main concern is the elements rather than stone chips. It's the best value all-over protection for most daily drivers.

Choose PPF if…

You've got a new, prestige or performance car and you want genuine physical protection for the paint — especially on the front end that copes with highway stone chips.

Choose both if…

You want the ultimate setup. Many owners apply PPF to the high-impact front end, then a ceramic coating over the entire car (film included). You get physical protection where it matters and a uniform, glossy, low-maintenance finish everywhere.

Think of PPF as the armour and ceramic as the polish-and-shield. They solve different problems, and together they cover everything.
